Revisitng Your Ideal Lifestyle
As so many are joining Marie Kondo’s KonMari Movement, I imagine you are delighted at the interest of your own friends, family, and colleagues. Whether you read Marie’s original book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, or watched the popular Netflix Series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, you are all early adopters of the method and I am so proud of your KonMari Journeys!
This month I would like to focus on ideal lifestyle, refocusing again on the kind of lifestyle we want moving forward. Envisioning this ideal lifestyle is the cornerstone to the beginning of your Tidying Journey. When envisioning your goals, the more vivid and clear it is, the more supportive it will be as you work through each category of the method.
One nuance I have learned in practicing the KonMari Method™, is that my ideal lifestyle has evolved. When my kids were young, my ideal lifestyle was to have more free time with my family during the evenings and weekends, and less household work cleaning up after our busy lifestyle. As a result, the baskets of toys in the living room were a way to return things to order after my children were asleep. Making sure that their rooms were organized to create a safe play environment (even though we all know how it feels to step on a Lego) was a part of my ideal lifestyle at the time.
As they have grown, I still love to spend as much time with them as possible, and their toys are no longer my concern. I do fold for them using the KonMari Method™, but once delivered to their room, what they do with their clothes are their own choice. My own ideal lifestyle now is focused on serving others to help them attain their goals. Through Spark Joy Bay Area, I can help people reduce clutter, find better storage methods, manage their paper, address collected items in their homes, and the list goes on and on. Just as my ideal lifestyle had shifted throughout the years, I know that it will continue to grow and evolve with me, just as yours will.
So now I ask you, is your current ideal lifestyle accurate to your present life? Even if you feel that answer is a yes, take a moment to close your eyes and reflect on the following questions:
What do you want your ideal lifestyle to be?
Is your ideal lifestyle exactly the same from previous years? How has your life changed?
Do you think this lifestyle is ideal for your family?
Ask your family, what they would love to feel when they enter their space and what would they like their own rooms to look like? What do you all wish you could have less or more of? Kids are great at envisioning. Give them the opportunity to share their insights with you to help you build this ideal lifestyle for your home. By encouraging kids to also take part in such, you can teach them what you have learned of the KonMari Method™ so that they can carry the method in their own lives!
I encourage that each year, or at a time best fit for you, actively think about your ideal lifestyle and whether or not it matches your present-day life. Our lives are constantly changing and priorities are always shifting. By addressing how to build the most efficient ideal lifestyle for your present self, you can keep the KonMari Method™ close to your heart.
