Sentimental: Repurposing and Archiving Heirlooms Using the KonMari Method™

Happy Fall!

In a previous blog, I’ve outlined a simple and easy way to navigate the sentimental category of the KonMari Method™. In this blog, I talk about the importance of repurposing your special items to a secondary home, to help keep them all-year-round. With the joy of giving around the corner, here are some new ideas you can use in your tidying festival to keep all your beloved sentimental items in your home with a new home.

Similar to all categories of the KonMari Method™, during each tidying festival we always set aside the things that are sentimental in nature. These items could be anything of sentimental value to you. More often than others, I’ve noticed my clients find sentimental clothing or papers during each of their tidying festivals, that are kept for this fifth and final category. This ends up being a substantial amount of items to consider at the end.

The good news is, by the time you approach the sentimental category, your ‘joy checking’ skills are honed and you are ready to make intentional decisions with confidence.

One of the best approaches to this category is thinking about how you can incorporate your heirloom items into your everyday life without keeping the clutter. Here are some of my favorite examples of how clients turned their sentimental treasures into adored and honored items (click to expand explanation):

Here are two other examples from last year’s blog post! They are still two of my favorite ways to repurpose sentimental items for everyday joy.

I hope this blog helped you learn new and innovative ways to store, keep, and repurpose your beloved items. For any questions or for more information on how to navigate the sentimental category, please contact me!
